Short answer Wait for the player to settle, then Sync now — and make sure you are both on a /watch/ URL.
Netflix is the service where a watch party has the most opportunities to look broken while behaving correctly. The reason is architectural: Netflix does not hand out a plain HTML5 video element to be poked at. It wraps playback in its own controller, so the extension has to ask the Netflix player to do things rather than doing them itself — and asking has a timing dimension that doing does not.
One side sees a black player
The usual sequence: they open the invite link, the page loads, and the player sits black while your side plays on. Netflix needs a moment after a navigation before it will accept a position, and a position pushed into that window is simply dropped.
The extension waits for the player rather than forcing it — which is right, because forcing it is what produces an error state — so the fix is patience followed by one button:
- Wait a couple of seconds for a frame to appear.
- Press Sync now on the side that is behind.
- If the player is still black after ten seconds, reload the tab and re-open the invite link. The room is still there.
You are on different episodes
Netflix's URLs are the cause. A party identifies the title by the numeric id in a
netflix.com/watch/<id> address. Two things go wrong:

The in-page Party pill on Netflix's title preview exists partly to avoid this: it resolves the episode Netflix's own Play button would open, rather than guessing from the browse URL.
"Are you still watching?" and other interruptions
Netflix's own prompts are per viewer, and they pause that viewer. So one of you gets stopped and the other does not, which reads as the party breaking.
- Are you still watching? — whoever gets it dismisses it; the party re-converges after.
- Skip intro — a jump like any other. Pressing it moves both sides, which is the behaviour you want.
- Next episode countdown — per viewer. If one of you lets it run and the other does not, you end up on different episodes; the video change then propagates and you re-sync.
A "too many streams" error is about your Netflix plan, not the party. Two people in a party are two accounts — if you are seeing a stream limit, someone is signed into one account twice, which is exactly the thing a party is meant to make unnecessary.
No badge on netflix.com at all
Then it is not Netflix-specific — reload the tab first, because a tab that was open before the extension was installed has no extension in it. The full list of causes is in the badge guide.
Netflix is healthy when both players show the same frame, a pause on either side stops the other, and pressing Skip intro on one side moves both.
